Within the SUTRA (astronomical calculation system) reference library on retrograde.pro, the first Mercury retrograde of 2026 spans twenty-two days from February 26 to March 20. Mercury stations retrograde at 22°34′ Pisces and stations direct at 8°29′ Pisces, keeping the entire loop inside a single mutable water sign.
Astronomically, this late-winter loop occurs as Mercury overtakes Earth near inferior conjunction on its eighty-eight-day heliocentric orbit around the Sun. While the planet continues forward in space without interruption, its geocentric projection drifts westward across fourteen degrees of Pisces against the background stars.
Chronology by Week
Pre-retrograde shadow (February 11 to February 26): Mercury crosses 8°29′ Pisces in direct motion on February 11 and enters the degree zone of the upcoming reversal. Documents, creative drafts, and scheduling questions introduced during these two weeks regularly return for revision in March.
Week 1 of reversal (February 26 to March 4): Mercury stations retrograde at 22°34′ Pisces on February 26 while Jupiter remains retrograde in the fellow water sign of Cancer. Written communications and travel schedules benefit from immediate confirmation as apparent daily motion reverses from eastward to westward.
Midpoint and inferior conjunction (March 5 to March 12): Around March 7 through March 9, Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun near 15°31′ Pisces while Jupiter stations direct on March 11. This central segment of the loop favors auditing existing manuscripts, reconciling financial records, and resolving delayed correspondence.
Week 3 and direct station (March 13 to March 20): Mercury decelerates across the second decan of Pisces and stations direct at 8°29′ Pisces on March 20, 2026. The post-retrograde shadow continues until April 9, when Mercury crosses 22°34′ Pisces for the third and final time.
Key Astronomical Milestones
February 11, 2026: entry into the pre-retrograde shadow arc at 8°29′ Pisces during direct eastward motion.
February 26, 2026: retrograde station at 22°34′ Pisces marking the formal start of the twenty-two-day westward loop.
March 20, 2026: direct station at 8°29′ Pisces followed by the post-retrograde shadow phase through April 9, 2026.
Practical Guidelines for the Pisces Transit
Because the entire February–March loop unfolds in Pisces, traditional analysis emphasizes written precision where verbal agreements might otherwise remain vague. Observers achieve reliable outcomes by archiving digital files, verifying banking details, and completing unfinished research before launching new external commitments.
Evaluation of Common Misconceptions
Popular articles often portray the March retrograde in Pisces as an unavoidable wave of confusion that ruins electronics and travel plans. In practice, the optical loop causes no mechanical damage, and methodical verification of dates and attachments prevents ordinary human oversight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Start and end dates of the March 2026 Mercury retrograde
The first Mercury retrograde of 2026 begins on February 26 at 22°34′ Pisces and ends on March 20 at 8°29′ Pisces. When the pre-retrograde and post-retrograde shadow phases are included, the full transit spans February 11 through April 9, 2026.
Zodiacal sign of the February and March 2026 reversal
Throughout the entire twenty-two-day reversal, Mercury remains inside the tropical water sign of Pisces across an arc of fourteen degrees and five arcminutes. The planet does not cross back into Aquarius at any point during the late-winter cycle.
Practical priorities during the Pisces retrograde loop
Observational guidelines recommend documenting verbal understandings in writing, double-checking travel itineraries, and finishing creative or archival projects begun in February. Major unreviewed commitments are best scheduled after the direct station on March 20, 2026.
